We have experienced staff capable of carrying out the full design life cycle - parts and assemblies can be designed and machined entirely in-house. We develop design solutions from sketches, CAD files, or from the ground up. We are housed in the Department of Physics & Astronomy but we do work for units all over campus. The MPL makes parts and assemblies for research groups, core labs, teaching labs, and departments.

If there is a concept of desired functionality but no other details we can set up a consultation meeting to discuss available options. We are experienced in designing novel solutions for a diverse set of challenges. If the design is already complete or needs only minor refinements, we can work with that as well.

We have multiple CNC and manual mills and lathes to manufacture a large variety of parts and assemblies out of various materials. Commonly used materials include aluminum, brass, mild steel, stainless steel, copper, and various engineering plastics. We also routinely fabricate weldments and sheet metal parts.

If an existing part needs to be modified to have better utility, that is also something we can do. Whether it is removing material for additional clearance, adding additional holes for more flexibility in an assembly, or combining with new parts we make, we will work with existing parts to increase functionality.
